Museum Manusia Purba Sangiran displays extensive collections of prehistoric human fossils and artifacts from the Sangiran Early Man Site, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Central Java, Indonesia.

Planning your visit

Sangiran in Central Java has produced roughly half of all known Homo erectus fossils — around fifty individuals, from deposits laid down over a million years, in what is among the most important early human sites anywhere.

The first find, in 1936, was a skull that Eugène Dubois's successors connected to the Java Man material found decades earlier and initially dismissed. UNESCO listed the site in 1996.

The museum displays fossils, casts and reconstructions covering human evolution and the geology of the Solo basin, with dioramas of the Pleistocene environment — an open landscape of rivers and volcanoes populated by elephants, hippopotamus and early humans.

Several cluster museums across the site cover different aspects, and the excavation areas themselves can be seen.

Sangiran is around three hours from Yogyakarta. Bookable options include day tours from Yogyakarta. Allow two hours. Current availability is listed below.
