Museum of Byzantine Culture

Thessaloniki was the second city of the Byzantine Empire for a thousand years, and the Museum of Byzantine Culture holds what that produced. The collection runs from the third to the nineteenth century — icons, wall paintings lifted from churches, mosaics, marble sculpture, jewellery, coins, textiles and everyday objects — arranged thematically to show Byzantine life rather than to march through emperors: early Christian burial practice, the church interior, the fortified city, the countryside, the Ottoman aftermath.

Kyriakos Krokos's building, opened in 1994, is admired in its own right: brick and concrete arranged in a low, inward-turning plan around courtyards, using natural light carefully in rooms holding fragile painted surfaces. It won the European Museum of the Year award in 2005.

The city around it holds a dozen UNESCO-listed Byzantine churches, several with mosaics in place, so the museum functions as the key to walking the city rather than as a substitute for it.
