The Istanbul branch has the best building of any in the chain. It occupies Narmanlı Han on İstiklal Caddesi — a nineteenth-century structure built as the Russian embassy and later a prison, then home to writers and artists including the poet Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar, restored after years of dereliction and controversy over the works.
The exhibits themselves follow the brand format: perceptual installations, mirrored rooms, holograms and a vortex tunnel, each with an explanation of the mechanism, designed for photography.
İstiklal is Istanbul's principal pedestrian street, running from Taksim down toward Galata, and the museum sits in the middle of it — easy to fold into a walk that takes in the passages, the Galata Tower and the tram.
