The MAMM occupies a converted steel mill in Ciudad del Río — the Talleres Robledo, a working factory whose brick structure was retained and extended with a new tower — which places it within Medellín's broader transformation of industrial and neglected space into public infrastructure.
The collection runs to over 2,000 works, predominantly Colombian, with particular strength in artists from Antioquia. Débora Arango is the central figure: a painter who in the 1930s and 40s produced work on prostitution, politics and the female body that was censored and condemned by the church, and who was largely excluded from Colombian art life for decades before her reappraisal. The museum holds the major collection of her work.
Cinema is a substantial part of the programme, with a dedicated theatre.
