Museum of Troy

Located near the ancient city of Troy, the Museum of Troy displays artifacts from the region’s 5,000-year history, including the Polyxena Sarcophagus and Roman sculptures.

Planning your visit

The Museum of Troy opened in 2018 in a rust-coloured cube half-sunk into the ground near the site — the oxidised steel referencing the layers of earth from which Troy was excavated, and the descent into it echoing the archaeology.

The exhibition covers 5,000 years of the Troad region across the nine successive cities built on the mound, the Homeric tradition, and the excavation history including Schliemann, who found the site but destroyed a great deal digging through it and smuggled the so-called Priam's Treasure out of Ottoman territory. Most of that gold remains in Moscow, taken from Berlin in 1945.

The Polyxena Sarcophagus, carved with the sacrifice of Priam's daughter, is the standout object, and Roman sculpture from the region fills further galleries.

The site itself, a short distance away, is unimpressive to the untrained eye — layered earth walls rather than monuments — which is exactly why the museum matters. Bookable options combine both. Current availability is shown below.
