The museum covers the European artists who settled on the island in the 1920s and 30s — Walter Spies, Rudolf Bonnet, Le Mayeur, Adrien-Jean Le Mayeur de Merprès — whose presence transformed Balinese painting by introducing perspective and individual authorship to a tradition that had been anonymous and religious. The resulting hybrid style is what most visitors now recognise as Balinese art.
Beyond Bali, the collection covers Indonesian, Southeast Asian, Polynesian and Melanesian material.
