The Muzeum PRL-u recreates daily life in the Polish People's Republic, and the approach is domestic rather than political — the argument being that the period is better understood through what people ate, wore, queued for and could not obtain than through party congresses.
Reconstructed interiors do most of the work: an apartment with its wall unit, folding sofa bed and Ruch newspaper kiosk aesthetic; a shop with the sparse shelves and ration coupons of the 1980s; a school classroom; a bar mleczny milk bar. Consumer objects — the Polski Fiat, the syrena vacuum cleaner, packaging, propaganda posters, television sets showing period broadcasts — carry the texture of it.
Poznań is a pointed place for this. The 1956 Poznań protests, when workers struck over wages and were fired on by the army with dozens killed, were the first major uprising against communist rule in Poland and are commemorated elsewhere in the city.
