National Museum “Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu”

Located within the historic Kruja Castle, the National Museum “Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu” showcases the life and achievements of Albania’s national hero, Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu. The museum’s architecture is inspired by traditional Albanian stone towers and medieval Romanesque style. Exhibits include historical objects, illustrations, weapons, and displays that chronicle the 15th-century resistance against the Ottoman Empire. Visitors can also enjoy panoramic views of Kruja and the surrounding landscapes from the castle walls. The museum offers a comprehensive insight into Albanian history and national identity.

Planning your visit

The Skanderbeg Museum stands inside Kruja Castle, and both the man and the setting are central to Albanian national identity. Gjergj Kastrioti, called Skanderbeg, was taken hostage by the Ottomans as a boy, raised and trained in their military, then defected in 1443 to lead Albanian resistance from this fortress — holding out against repeated Ottoman campaigns for twenty-five years, until his death in 1468. The museum, opened in 1982 and designed by Enver Hoxha's daughter and son-in-law, is built in the style of a traditional Albanian stone tower with Romanesque elements, deliberately monumental.

Inside are weapons, armour, illustrations, replicas of his sword and helmet with its goat's-head crest, and large-scale artworks depicting the campaigns. The presentation is unabashedly nationalist, produced under a communist regime that used Skanderbeg as a symbol of resistance to foreign power — worth knowing as you read it.

The castle walls give panoramic views over the plain toward the Adriatic, and the old bazaar street below the entrance sells carpets, antiques and Ottoman-era goods.
