National Museum of Qatar

Planning your visit

Jean Nouvel built the National Museum of Qatar out of interlocking discs — 539 of them, in sand-coloured fibre-reinforced concrete, cantilevered and tilted into each other to echo the desert rose, the crystal formation that grows where sand and water meet beneath the surface. It is one of the more ambitious museum buildings anywhere, and the interior has almost no straight walls or right angles, with galleries curving through spaces defined by the intersecting discs.

The exhibition wraps 1.5 kilometres of continuous route around the original Palace of Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassim Al Thani, restored at the museum's centre. The story runs from the geological formation of the peninsula through Bedouin life, the pearling industry that sustained Qatar before oil, the collapse of that trade when Japanese cultured pearls arrived, and the transformation since. Large-scale film projected directly onto the curved walls carries much of it.

The Pearl Carpet of Baroda — embroidered with over a million Basra pearls — is the single most remarkable object.
