The Oceanogràfic is the largest aquarium in Europe, holding some 45,000 animals of 500 species across buildings that each represent a marine environment — Mediterranean, wetlands, temperate and tropical seas, oceans, Antarctic, Arctic, islands and the Red Sea.

Félix Candela designed the entrance pavilion and the underwater restaurant, whose thin concrete shells are among the last works of one of the twentieth century's great structural engineers, and Santiago Calatrava's City of Arts and Sciences surrounds it.

The Arctic and Antarctic buildings hold belugas and walruses; the dolphinarium is among the largest anywhere, which is a point of contention for visitors who object to cetacean display.

Research, rescue and rehabilitation work is genuine and documented.
