Oman Across Ages opened at Manah in the interior, and its purpose is explicitly national: to present Omani history from prehistory to the present, with substantial emphasis on the transformation after 1970, when Sultan Qaboos deposed his father and began developing a country that then had almost no paved roads, hospitals or schools.
The earlier galleries cover genuinely deep history — Oman's copper trade with Mesopotamia, the frankincense economy that made the south wealthy in antiquity, the falaj irrigation systems that are a UNESCO listing, and the maritime empire that at its height controlled Zanzibar and parts of the East African coast.
The building is a striking modern structure of angular forms referencing the Hajar mountains behind it.
