The Osaka Museum of History stands beside Osaka Castle in a tower whose foundations sit directly on an archaeological site — the Naniwa Palace, an imperial capital of the seventh and eighth centuries, whose excavated remains are preserved in the basement and visible on the tour.
The museum works downward from the tenth floor: reconstructions of the Naniwa Palace hall with life-size figures, then the medieval city, then Toyotomi Hideyoshi's Osaka, then the Edo merchant city that made Osaka the commercial capital of Japan, and finally the modern industrial city and its wartime destruction.
The tenth-floor windows give a direct view over Osaka Castle and its grounds, which is among the best vantage points on the complex.
Hideyoshi is the figure the city is built around — the peasant who rose to unify Japan and made Osaka his base.
