Peace and Freedom Museum

Located in Alsancak, Kyrenia, the Peace and Freedom Museum presents artifacts from the 1974 Turkish invasion, including military equipment and personal items.

Planning your visit

In July 1974 Turkish forces landed in northern Cyprus following a Greek-backed coup, and the island has been divided since — with the Republic of Cyprus in the south and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, recognised only by Turkey, in the north.

The Peace and Freedom Museum at Alsancak near Kyrenia presents the northern account: military equipment from the operation, weapons, vehicles, uniforms, photographs and personal items, in an open-air setting near the landing beaches.

Visitors should understand the framing clearly. What the museum calls a peace operation is described by the Republic of Cyprus and by the United Nations as an invasion and occupation, and the events displaced populations in both directions with unresolved property claims and missing persons on both sides. The Greek Cypriot account is not represented here.
