Pintô is as much a place as a collection. Joven Cuanang, a neurologist and patron, built it into the hillside at Antipolo above Manila — a complex of white Mediterranean-style buildings, courtyards, gardens and terraces stepping down the slope, with the city visible below on clear days.
The collection covers contemporary Filipino art, with strength in the social realists and the artists who emerged after the Marcos period: Elmer Borlongan, Mark Justiniani, Emmanuel Garibay and others whose work addresses inequality, migration and Philippine political life directly.
Indigenous art and modernist work fill further galleries.
The gardens are as much the visit as the art, and the museum is a favoured destination for a day out of Manila's heat and traffic.
