The Polish Aviation Museum sits on the Rakowice-Czyżyny airfield, one of the oldest military airfields in Europe, and it holds over 200 aircraft — a collection whose importance rests on a strange piece of history. Part of the pre-war Deutsche Luftfahrt-Sammlung, the German national aviation collection, was evacuated during the Second World War and much of it ended up here, meaning the museum holds early aircraft that exist nowhere else, including rare pre-1918 machines.

Alongside those sit Polish designs, Soviet-era military aircraft including MiG fighters, helicopters, gliders and engines, displayed both in the modern hangar building and across the open field. The outdoor display is extensive, so weather shapes the visit considerably.
