Giacomo Puccini was born in this apartment in Lucca in 1858, the fifth generation of a family of church musicians in the city, and he lived here until leaving for Milan at twenty-two.
The museum preserves the rooms with original furnishings, including the Steinway piano on which he composed Turandot, left unfinished at his death in 1924. Autograph scores, letters, costumes from early productions and personal effects fill the rest.
Lucca takes Puccini seriously — there are daily concerts of his arias in the church of San Giovanni, a statue in the square outside the house, and the Puccini festival at Torre del Lago on the coast where he later lived and wrote most of his mature operas.
The city itself is walled, flat, and best seen by bicycle on the tree-lined ramparts.
