The Indochina material is the reason it matters. The École des Beaux-Arts de l'Indochine, founded in Hanoi in 1925, produced the first generation of Vietnamese painters trained in European technique, and the resulting work — particularly the lacquer and silk paintings, which applied French compositional ideas to traditional materials — is now heavily collected and increasingly expensive.
Works by Lê Phổ, Mai Trung Thứ and Nguyễn Gia Trí are among the holdings.
