Established in 1959, the Quanzhou Maritime Museum showcases Quanzhou’s role in the Maritime Silk Road through exhibits on ancient ships, religious artifacts, and cultural exchanges.
Planning your visit
Quanzhou was Zayton, and Marco Polo described it as one of the two greatest ports in the world. Through the Song and Yuan dynasties it was China's principal maritime gateway, and UNESCO inscribed the city in 2021 for exactly that role.
The maritime museum covers it, and its most remarkable holding is a Song dynasty seagoing ship excavated from the harbour mud in 1974 — a wooden hull with watertight bulkheads, a Chinese innovation centuries ahead of European practice, displayed alongside the cargo recovered with it.
The religious stones are the other exceptional collection: carved fragments from Islamic, Hindu, Manichaean, Nestorian Christian and Buddhist buildings that stood in the city simultaneously, evidence of a genuinely cosmopolitan port where foreign merchant communities worshipped freely.
Manichaean material in particular survives almost nowhere else.
