Harry Recanati, a banker, sold his interests and established a series of museums on four continents, all free to enter, all showing contemporary Latin American art alongside European surrealism, and all funded by a foundation rather than by ticket revenue.
The Punta del Este museum, opened in 1988, is the first and largest. Its collection includes Dalí, Magritte, de Chirico and Delvaux among the Europeans, and Botero, Matta and Lam among the Latin Americans, with sculpture in the gardens.
The building is Mediterranean in style, white with tiled roofs around courtyards, in the Beverly Hills district of Punta del Este.
Free admission is an unusual policy for a collection of this quality, and it reflects the founder's stated view that art should not be gated by cost.
