Etar is an open-air museum built around water. Along a stream in the Gabrovo valley, restored nineteenth-century workshops use water wheels to drive their machinery — a fulling mill pounding woollen cloth, a grain mill, a lathe, a bell foundry, a tannery — and the mechanisms actually run, which makes the site a working demonstration of pre-industrial technology rather than a static village.

Craftsmen occupy the workshops and produce goods by hand: coppersmiths, potters, wood turners, bakers, icon painters and cutlers, selling what they make. The Bulgarian National Revival period, when Gabrovo was a centre of craft and trade under Ottoman rule, is the era reconstructed.

The cobbled street, the water channels and the mountain setting make it attractive independent of the interpretation.
