The nineteenth-century neoclassical building was kept intact while an entirely new museum was inserted into its former courtyards — stark white vertical galleries reached through narrow slots, so the visit alternates between grand historic halls and a hidden modern museum folded inside them.

The collection spans seven centuries. The Flemish Primitives are the strength: Van Eyck, Van der Weyden, Memling and Fouquet, alongside the largest Rubens holding in a museum after the Prado, and Antwerp Baroque generally. The modern galleries hold the world's largest James Ensor collection — his masks, skeletons and Christ's Entry into Brussels — plus Magritte and Belgian modernism.
