San Andrés was Henry Morgan's territory. The Welsh privateer who sacked Panama operated across this part of the Caribbean in the seventeenth century, and the island's folklore is thick with him — caves said to hold his treasure, and a persistent local industry built on the association.

The Persistence exhibition tells the pirate history of the archipelago through interactive displays and virtual reality, covering the buccaneers, the Spanish treasure routes they preyed on, and the island's own layered past: English Puritan settlers, enslaved Africans, and the Raizal people who speak a creole and are culturally Caribbean rather than Colombian.

The VR sequences are the draw for younger visitors.

San Andrés itself is a duty-free island 700 kilometres from the Colombian mainland, closer to Nicaragua, ringed by a reef the locals call the sea of seven colours.
