Shaanxi Archaeology Museum

Opened in April 2022, the Shaanxi Archaeology Museum in Xi’an is China’s first comprehensive archaeological museum. It displays over 5,200 cultural relics unearthed over the past 60 years, spanning from prehistoric times to the imperial period. The museum integrates archaeological research, cultural relics protection, education, and display, offering visitors insights into Shaanxi’s rich history and cultural heritage.

The Shaanxi Archaeology Museum, opened in April 2022, is China's first museum devoted to archaeology as a discipline rather than to the objects it produces. That distinction is the whole point of the place. Rather than displaying finished treasures, it shows how excavation works: stratigraphy, dating methods, conservation laboratories, field recording, and the reconstruction of sites from fragmentary evidence. Over 5,200 relics recovered across sixty years of work in Shaanxi are displayed within that framework, from prehistoric material through the Zhou, Qin, Han and Tang.

For Xi'an specifically this fills a real gap. The Terracotta Army shows the spectacular result of excavation; this museum shows the discipline that produced it, including how the warriors' original paint was lost and what is being done to save what remains. Visitors who found the Terracotta Army moving usually find this more interesting than they expect.

It is newer and much less crowded than the Shaanxi History Museum, and reservations are easier to obtain.
