The Shaanxi History Museum covers the province that was the political centre of China for over a thousand years, through thirteen dynasties, with Xi'an — then Chang'an — as the imperial capital at the eastern end of the Silk Road. That gives it extraordinary material: over 370,000 artefacts including Zhou and Han bronzes, Tang gold and silver, glazed pottery figures, and detached Tang dynasty tomb murals showing court life, polo matches and foreign envoys in colours that have barely faded. The Tang holdings are the finest anywhere.

The building is in Tang architectural style, and the museum has recently expanded with the separate Qin and Han branch, which is the main planning point: the branches are separately ticketed and located apart, so check which one your booking covers. Admission requires advance reservation with passport details, and slots sell out — this is one of Xi'an's most visited sites after the Terracotta Army.

Bookable options include entry tickets for the main museum and for the Qin Han branch, tickets with guide options, and immersive walk-through experiences at the newer branch. Guides matter here because the chronology spans several millennia and English labelling is uneven. Several formats combine the museum with the Big Wild Goose Pagoda nearby, the Tang-era brick pagoda built to house sutras brought back from India, which fits naturally with the museum's Silk Road material.
