The Shanghai Museum holds one of China's finest collections of ancient art, and its building states the theme before you enter: Xing Tonghe designed it as a round form on a square base, echoing a bronze ding tripod and the traditional conception of a round heaven over a square earth. Inside are over 120,000 objects, with the bronze gallery the standout — ritual vessels spanning the Shang and Zhou dynasties, the finest such collection in the country — alongside ceramics tracing Chinese porcelain from neolithic wares through the imperial kilns, plus calligraphy, painting, jade, furniture and coins.

The museum's situation is currently in flux, which matters for planning: the original People's Square building has been joined by the much larger Shanghai Museum East in Pudong, with collections progressively moving and both sites operating. Checking which building holds what before booking avoids a wasted journey across the river. Admission has historically been free with timed reservation.
