Škoda is one of the oldest surviving car manufacturers in the world, founded in 1895 by a bookseller and a mechanic building bicycles in Mladá Boleslav, moving to motorcycles and then cars. The museum occupies the original production halls where vehicles were built until 1928, which gives the collection an appropriate industrial setting.

The vehicles run from the earliest Laurin & Klement machines through the interwar years, when Czechoslovak engineering was highly regarded, into the communist period — the Škoda 1000 MB and the rear-engined cars that became emblems of Eastern Bloc motoring, treated here with some affection and some honesty about their limitations — and then the Volkswagen era and the transformation since 1991.

That arc, from imperial-era craftsmanship through state socialism to global manufacturing, makes it a more interesting museum than a straightforward marque collection.

Factory tours of the adjacent working plant are available separately and are worth adding if you have the time.
