Suomenlinna Museum

Located within the Suomenlinna Fortress, the Suomenlinna Museum showcases the fortress’s 260-year history, spanning Swedish, Russian, and Finnish eras. Exhibits include artifacts from archaeological digs, tools, weapons, and ammunition. The museum also features the ‘Suomenlinna Experience’ widescreen presentation, offering an engaging overview of the fortress’s significance in Finnish history. Visitors can also enjoy the museum shop and Café Augustin on-site.

Suomenlinna is a sea fortress spread across six islands at the entrance to Helsinki harbour, built by Sweden from 1748 as a defence against Russia, surrendered to Russia in 1808, and inherited by independent Finland in 1918 — three regimes, each of which built and rebuilt it. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and also a living neighbourhood with around 800 residents.

The museum covers that 260-year history through archaeological finds, tools, weapons and models, with the Suomenlinna Experience widescreen presentation giving a fast overview. It functions best as the orientation before walking the islands, where the real interest lies: bastions and ramparts, the dry dock still in use, the King's Gate, tunnels, and a preserved submarine, Vesikko.

The ferry from Market Square takes about fifteen minutes and runs year-round as part of Helsinki public transport, which is a pleasant journey in itself.

Allow half a day at minimum for the islands; the fortress is large and the walking substantial.
