Its argument is that cloth carries the human record as directly as any other material: trade routes, technologies, status, belief and labour are legible in it, and often the textile is the only surviving evidence.
Exhibitions rotate rather than presenting a fixed display, and the programme regularly commissions contemporary artists working in fibre — a field that has moved from craft margins to serious contemporary practice over the past two decades.
The museum sits in a downtown building off Dundas near the Art Gallery of Ontario, and has plans to relocate.
