The original Museum of Danish Resistance burned down in 2013 in an arson attack, destroying the building though most of the collection was saved. The replacement opened in 2020, largely underground beside the Kastellet, and it takes an immersive approach — visitors follow individual resistance members through the occupation, with their choices and fates revealed progressively.
Denmark's occupation was unusual. The country was taken in a few hours in April 1940 and initially governed under a cooperative arrangement, with the government and monarchy remaining in place, which delayed and complicated resistance. Sabotage and an underground press grew from 1943, and in October that year almost the entire Danish Jewish population — around 7,000 people — was ferried to neutral Sweden in fishing boats after a warning leaked from a German diplomat, one of the few successful mass rescues of the war.
