U-434 is a Soviet Tango-class submarine built in 1976, used for reconnaissance operations that included shadowing NATO forces off the American coast, decommissioned in 2002 and towed to Hamburg as a museum ship.
She is 90 metres long and visitors walk the full length of the interior, which is the entire point: the torpedo rooms, the sonar and radio stations with equipment still labelled in Russian, the diesel and electric machinery spaces, the galley and the bunks fitted between the torpedo racks. Around 78 men lived here for months without surfacing.
Nothing has been widened for visitors — the hatches are as they were, which rules out anyone with mobility difficulties or serious claustrophobia.
She lies at the Fischmarkt on the St. Pauli waterfront, walkable from the Landungsbrücken.
