Van Gogh lived in Nuenen from 1883 to 1885, in the parsonage where his father was the minister, and produced around a quarter of his entire output there — roughly 500 drawings and paintings, including The Potato Eaters, the dark peasant picture he considered his first real work.
The village museum does not hold original paintings. What it offers instead is the place: an interpretation centre covering those two years and the family conflicts around them, and a marked walk through Nuenen past the sites he painted — the parsonage, the church his father preached in, the watermill, the weavers' cottages — with markers at the vantage points he used.

Nuenen is a short drive from Eindhoven, and the Van Gogh Roosegaarde bicycle path nearby glows at night.
