The Viimsi Open Air Museum preserves the Kingu farm, a coastal smallholding of the 1820s on the peninsula northeast of Tallinn, with its dwelling, outbuildings, nets, boats and the arrangement of a household that lived from both land and sea.

Estonian coastal culture was distinct from the inland farming culture: fishing, seal hunting, boatbuilding, and a long relationship with the Swedish-speaking communities of the islands and the smuggling that flourished under prohibition.

Soviet border restrictions after 1945 closed this coast entirely — fishing was controlled, boats registered, and beaches raked at night to show footprints — and that rupture is part of what the museum records.

The site is small and outdoors, and it works best in summer when demonstrations and events run.
