The War Museum in Siem Reap is an outdoor collection of the hardware left behind by three decades of Cambodian conflict — Soviet and Chinese tanks, artillery, a MiG fighter, a helicopter, small arms and defused landmines, arranged in a field and open to be walked among and touched.
What distinguishes it is the guides. Many are former soldiers, some of them amputees from mine injuries, who fought in the civil war and talk about their own experience rather than delivering a script. That firsthand account is the reason to take a guide rather than wander.
Cambodia's conflict ran from the American bombing through the Khmer Rouge period and a Vietnamese occupation into fighting that continued in the northwest until the late 1990s, and the mine contamination it produced is still being cleared.
