Planning your visit
Wat Phu predates Angkor. The temple on the slopes of Phu Kao, some forty kilometres from Pakse, was a Khmer sanctuary from at least the fifth century, rebuilt in stone in the eleventh and twelfth, and the mountain above it carries a natural formation the builders read as a lingam — which is why the site was sacred long before the Khmer arrived.
The museum at the entrance holds the sculpture and architectural fragments removed from the ruins for protection: lintels, pediments, Shiva and Vishnu images, nagas and dvarapala guardians, with the reliefs in better condition than anything left on the hillside.
The complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the ascent to the upper sanctuary is a long stair through frangipani trees.
