Armenia has a serious claim to being the birthplace of winemaking. The Areni-1 cave in Vayots Dzor yielded a complete winery — press, fermentation vats, storage jars and grape seeds — dated to around 4100 BC, the oldest known anywhere. The Wine History Museum at Sasunik covers that 8,000-year tradition, and it is built eight metres underground inside basalt rock, which keeps it naturally cool and gives the visit the feel of a cellar rather than a gallery.

Exhibits run from archaeological material through ethnographic displays of traditional production — the karas, enormous clay vessels buried in the ground for fermentation, still used by some producers — to modern winemaking and the revival of indigenous grape varieties. Areni noir in particular has drawn international attention as a variety found nowhere else.

Tastings are integral, and they are the point: Armenian wine is unfamiliar to most visitors and tasting the indigenous varieties is the argument the museum is making.
