Zalipie is a village in which the houses are painted with flowers — inside and out, on walls, ceilings, stoves, doghouses, wells and the bridge — a tradition that began in the nineteenth century when women whitewashed over the soot from smoky stoves and then decorated the patches.

Felicja Curyłowa, who died in 1974, was the most accomplished of the painters, and her cottage was preserved as a museum with everything as she left it: every surface in the house covered, along with the furniture, the plates and the utensils.

An annual competition, held since 1948, keeps the practice alive across the village, so the painting is renewed rather than merely conserved.

Zalipie is around ninety minutes east of Kraków in the Tarnów district, and the whole village is the attraction.
