Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA) is a public non-profit museum in Cape Town, South Africa, dedicated to contemporary art from Africa and its diaspora.
Planning your visit
Thomas Heatherwick carved the Zeitz MOCAA out of a disused grain silo on Cape Town's waterfront — 42 concrete tubes, cut through on the diagonal to produce a cathedral-like central atrium whose shape is derived from a single enlarged grain of corn. It is among the most photographed interiors in Africa.
The museum, opened in 2017, is the largest devoted to contemporary art from Africa and its diaspora, built initially on Jochen Zeitz's collection and since expanded.
The programme has been substantial — major solo shows for African artists who had been shown internationally but rarely at home — and the museum has weathered public controversy over its early leadership and questions about who African art institutions serve.
