The Chengdu Sichuan Cuisine Museum is the only museum in the world dedicated to a single regional Chinese cuisine, and it is far more hands-on than that description suggests. Set in Pidu District in buildings modelled on traditional Sichuan courtyard dwellings, it covers the history of the cuisine — the arrival of the chilli from the Americas in the sixteenth century and how it transformed a cooking tradition already built on the numbing Sichuan peppercorn — through utensils, historical documents and reconstructed kitchens. The pickle and bean-paste jars in the courtyard, where Pixian doubanjiang ferments for years, are part of the exhibit.

The core of the visit is participatory. Cooking classes teach dishes such as mapo tofu and kung pao chicken with an instructor, and tastings run alongside. That makes this a two-to-three hour commitment rather than a walk-through, and sessions are scheduled rather than continuous, so arriving without a booking risks finding nothing running.

Bookable options include day tours built around the cooking experience with transport from central Chengdu — the museum is well outside the city, which is the main practical obstacle — and shorter formats combining entry with tastings only. Some tours add bamboo craft workshops in the surrounding area. Given that Chengdu is where most visitors encounter Sichuan food properly for the first time, doing this early in a stay tends to improve everything eaten afterwards.
