The Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) in Doha, Qatar, houses one of the world’s most comprehensive collections of Islamic art, spanning 1,400 years and three continents. Designed by architect I.M. Pei, the museum’s architecture is a fusion of traditional Islamic patterns and modern design. Its collection includes metalwork, ceramics, jewelry, woodwork, textiles, and glass, reflecting the diversity of Islamic heritage. The museum also features a library with over 21,000 books, a café, a restaurant, and hosts various cultural events throughout the year.

The Museum of Islamic Art was I.M. Pei's last major commission, and he came out of retirement at 91 to take it — then spent months travelling the Islamic world studying architecture before designing anything. He insisted the building stand on its own island, built on reclaimed land off Doha's Corniche, so nothing could ever crowd it. The result is a stack of cream limestone geometry that shifts as the sun moves, drawn from the ablution fountain of the Ibn Tulun mosque in Cairo, with a five-storey atrium and a north window framing the Gulf and the city skyline.
The collection matches the building: 1,400 years of Islamic art across three continents, covering metalwork, ceramics, glass, textiles, manuscripts, jewellery and woodwork from Spain to Central Asia and India. It is arranged by medium rather than strictly by region, which shows how techniques and motifs travelled. The museum reopened in 2022 after a full redisplay.
Practically, the view back toward West Bay at sunset from the museum park is one of Doha's best, and the building is worth timing for late afternoon. Allow two hours minimum.
