Empress Elisabeth of Austria has been softened by film and merchandising into a romantic figure; the museum, inside the Hofburg's imperial apartments, presents the documented woman — obsessive about her weight and appearance, exercising and dieting to an extreme, ill at ease with court protocol, travelling compulsively to avoid Vienna, and assassinated by an anarchist in Geneva in 1898. Her possessions carry that story: parasols and fans used to hide her face from onlookers, her travelling medicine chest, reconstructions of her gowns, the file used to sharpen the weapon that killed her.
