Amalienborg Museum

Amalienborg is four identical rococo palaces around an octagonal courtyard, and it is a working royal residence — the Danish monarch lives here, which is why the guard changes daily at noon with the walk down from Rosenborg. The museum occupies Christian VIII's Palace, one of the four, and shows the private apartments of three generations of monarchs preserved as they were used, from around 1863 onwards: studies with pipes and papers on the desks, family photographs, the accumulated clutter of actual living rather than staged period rooms.

The Gala Hall covers ceremonial life, and the Fabergé Chamber holds pieces connected to the Danish princess who became Empress of Russia — the Romanov connection runs deep in Danish royal history, and the objects reflect it.

The domestic scale is the appeal: this is a monarchy presented as a family that occupied rooms, not as a spectacle.

Allow around an hour. It sits on the harbour a short walk from Nyhavn.
