Museo Correr

Planning your visit

The Museo Correr occupies the Napoleonic Wing and the Procuratie Nuove along the far end of St Mark's Square, which means the visit includes rooms most people never realise are open — the neoclassical royal apartments built for Napoleon and later used by the Austrian emperors, including Empress Sisi's rooms, and windows looking straight down the length of the piazza.

The collection was founded on Teodoro Correr's 1830 bequest and covers Venetian art and civilisation: Bellini family paintings, Carpaccio, Antonio Canova's early sculpture including the plaster Daedalus and Icarus, coins, maps, ship models, arms and the ceremonial objects of the Republic. The Biblioteca Marciana's monumental hall is part of the route.

The key practical point is ticketing: the Correr is covered by the same combined ticket as the Doge's Palace, so most visitors receive entry whether or not they use it. Many skip it entirely, which is a mistake — it is far quieter than the Palace and the apartments are remarkable.
