El Castillo Museum

El Castillo Museum, located in Medellín’s El Poblado district, is a Gothic-style castle built in 1930, inspired by France’s Loire Valley. It houses a collection of decorative arts, including porcelain, glass, stained glass, tapestries, paintings, and sculptures. The museum also features French-style gardens and hosts cultural events and workshops, making it a cultural landmark in Medellín.

El Castillo is a Gothic Revival castle built in 1930 in the hills of El Poblado, modelled on the châteaux of the Loire by an architect who had studied in France, and later the home of a Medellín industrialist family. It became a museum in 1971 and remains furnished as a private house: decorative arts across porcelain, glass, stained glass, tapestries, paintings and sculpture, arranged through rooms rather than galleries.

The gardens are the other half of the visit — formal French terraces with clipped hedges, fountains and views down over the city, laid out across several hectares and used for concerts and cultural events. Given Medellín's climate, they are usable year-round.

The museum offers a particular angle on the city: the wealth and European aspiration of Medellín's industrial class in the early twentieth century, which sits in pointed contrast to the narratives most visitors arrive with.

Bookable options are mostly private tours combining El Castillo with other Medellín sites — Parque Explora and the botanical garden, or Comuna 13, the hillside neighbourhood transformed by escalators and street art.
