Museum of the 90s

Located in the heart of Belgrade, the Museum of the 90s offers an immersive journey into the 1990s, featuring rare photographs, personal stories, and artifacts that shed light on the post-Yugoslav era. The museum’s mission is to familiarize the public with this pivotal decade and confront contemporary challenges. The Museum of the 90s covers the decade when Yugoslavia came apart, seen from Belgrade. That is a difficult subject to present in Serbia, and the museum approaches it through everyday life rather than through the wars directly: hyperinflation that reached figures almost impossible to state, the sanctions, the queues, the improvised economy, the turbo-folk music, the fashion, the smuggled goods, the way people got through it. Photographs, personal objects and testimony carry it.

The result is more oral history than political account. Visitors looking for a reckoning with the wars in Croatia, Bosnia and Kosovo will find the museum indirect; those interested in how a society experienced collapse from the inside will find it valuable and often unexpectedly funny.

For foreign visitors it functions as an introduction to a decade that shaped everything about the region they are travelling in, and which is barely explained anywhere else in the city.

It is central, on Kneza Miloša, and open daily until 8pm. Allow around an hour.
