The Nationaal Holocaustmuseum in Amsterdam is the first and only museum dedicated to the history of Jewish persecution in the Netherlands, offering exhibitions, educational programs, and events.
Planning your visit
The Netherlands lost around 75 percent of its Jewish population in the Holocaust — the highest proportion in western Europe, and far higher than in Belgium or France. Explaining why is one of the most difficult questions in Dutch history: the efficiency of the Dutch civil registration system, which recorded religion, the geography of a small flat country with no mountains or forests to hide in, and the extent of official cooperation.
The Nationaal Holocaustmuseum, which opened fully in 2024, is the first museum devoted to that history. It occupies a former teacher training college opposite the Hollandsche Schouwburg, a theatre used as a deportation assembly point — and the college was where members of the resistance smuggled Jewish children out through the garden.
The exhibition works through personal objects and testimony, covering persecution, deportation, hiding, resistance and survival.
It sits in the former Jewish quarter, near the Portuguese Synagogue and the Jewish Historical Museum.
