Automuseum PROTOTYP in Hamburg's HafenCity takes an unusual angle: it presents cars through the people who built and drove them rather than as objects alone. The subtitle is personalities and prototypes, and each vehicle is displayed with the biography attached.

The collection concentrates on German sports and racing cars from the immediate postwar years onward, with particular depth in Porsche — including early prototypes and competition cars — alongside Formula racing machinery and rare one-offs that never entered production.

The postwar context is the interesting part: a defeated and divided country with its industry in ruins producing, within a few years, some of the most advanced sports cars in the world, built by engineers whose wartime histories the museum does not avoid.

The building is a converted rubber factory in the redeveloped harbour district, near the Elbphilharmonie and the Speicherstadt warehouses.
