Autoworld occupies the vast Art Deco halls of the Cinquantenaire, built in 1880 for Belgium's fiftieth anniversary and one of the great exhibition spaces in Europe — iron and glass on a scale that dwarfs the 300-plus vehicles inside.

Belgium's automotive history is largely forgotten now, but the country had a substantial industry before the Second World War: Minerva built luxury cars that rivalled Rolls-Royce, alongside Imperia, FN and Germain, and the museum's Belgian holdings are the collection's real distinction.

Around them run vehicles from the 1880s to the present across European and American marques, royal automobiles used by the Belgian court, sports and racing cars, and temporary exhibitions.

The Cinquantenaire park also holds the Art and History Museum and the Royal Military Museum, making a substantial museum cluster.
