Balat is one of Istanbul's oldest neighbourhoods — historically Jewish, adjoining Greek Fener, with steep streets of painted timber houses running down to the Golden Horn — and it has become one of the city's most photographed districts.

The Balat Toy Museum holds over 17,000 toys from around the world, spanning roughly two centuries: tin and clockwork toys, dolls, model trains and cars, board games, and mid-twentieth-century Turkish toys that visitors of a certain age recognise immediately.

Toy collections work on nostalgia, and the specific pleasure here is seeing how the same impulses produced different objects in different decades and countries — the mechanical ingenuity of pre-war tin, the plastic optimism of the 1960s.

It functions well as a stop while walking Balat, which is the main reason most visitors are in the area.
