The Cambodia Landmine Museum, founded by Aki Ra, educates visitors on the impact of landmines in Cambodia, showcasing deactivated mines and wartime weapons.
Planning your visit
Aki Ra was conscripted as a child soldier by the Khmer Rouge and spent years laying mines. He later returned to clear them, initially by hand with a stick and a knife, and founded this museum on the road toward Banteay Srei to display what he had recovered and to fund a relief centre for children injured by ordnance.
The collection is deactivated devices: anti-personnel mines from a dozen countries, anti-tank mines, mortar rounds, rockets and unexploded bombs, alongside accounts of the mining of Cambodia during the civil war and the Vietnamese period, the clearance effort, and its cost. Cambodia remains among the most heavily mined countries in the world.
The displays are plain and text-heavy, and considerably more powerful for it.
The museum is on the route to the outer Angkor temples, and it takes under an hour.
