H'ART Museum occupies the Amstelhof, a seventeenth-century almshouse on the Amstel that housed elderly poor for three centuries before becoming a museum in 2009. For most of its museum life it operated as the Hermitage Amsterdam, mounting exhibitions from the St Petersburg collections under a partnership agreement.

That relationship ended abruptly in March 2022 following the invasion of Ukraine, and the institution renamed itself H'ART and rebuilt its programme around partnerships with other museums — the Centre Pompidou, the British Museum and the Smithsonian among them.

It therefore has no permanent collection of its own, and what is showing determines the visit entirely. Checking the current exhibition before booking is essential.

The building itself is worth attention: an enormous brick courtyard structure, austere and vast, with parts preserved as the almshouse it was.
